August 2009

Well, it’s now been three weeks since we’ve seen any barn swallows. The last day we saw them was on August 10th. Most of the other bird species have gone as well, including the mocking birds. I guess they have all started their migration south. I would not have guessed that bird migration from North Texas would have started this early.

During the past two days we have had at least 3 barn swallows at one time on the shelves under the eaves. On two of their visits, one of the birds sat in the nest for a few minutes. Our lone solitary swallow has been spending the night perched on one of the shelves for the past two nights. They are all gone most of the daytime hours, with a few infrequent visits. The last time I saw them here there were two of them.

Well, sad to say, the solitary barn swallow that had been spending the night the last week or so since the smoke detector alarm went off is no longer around nor spending the night. I haven’t seen any barn swallows in the past two days.
